Tactical Positioning

Lateral (Side)

Usage: ~60% of Adults

The most common and generally optimal position. Excellent for airway clearance (reducing sleep apnea risk) and glymphatic clearance (brain waste removal).

Age & Architecture

Light is the primary zeitgeber (time-giver). Your suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) requires high-lux photon contrast in the morning to start the biological timer, and absolute darkness at night to allow melatonin secretion. Screens destroy this contrast.

No. A tiny fraction of the population possesses a genetic mutation (DEC2) allowing them to survive on 6 hours without impairment. For the other 99%, subjective feeling adapts to deprivation (you forget what it feels like to be fully rested), but objective cognitive tests show consistent, compounded degradation.
Alcohol is a sedative, not a sleep aid. It knocks out your cortex, mimicking sleep, but it aggressively fragments your sleep architecture and blocks REM sleep. When the alcohol wears off, you experience a rebound effect, resulting in frequent awakenings.
